Charlie wanted to go home after only a few miles on his bike so he and Jim turned around. After a good dinner, he did his characteristic standing and making of various noises.
Uncharacteritically, Charlie went to bed and to sleep, before 9 pm.
It occurred to Jim and me that it has really been several days, a week or so, since he has had a real sleep and he never properly rested after Sunday night's intense exertions. No wonder he's been so querulous all week and world-weary.
