Blue lights flashing, red light spinning, like the glow on Christmas trees, and sirens whirrrrr. A police car sped by Charlie and me as we approached an elementary school in our neighborhood a few days ago. The police car slowed, parked, and out came a policeman. Some voice blared from the car. The policeman headed across the grass towards the school. Charlie ran diagonally across the grass. Was there someone barricaded in the school? In the trees by the athletic fields? Another police car, sirens and lights going full-speed. And another. And a firetruck. And Charlie running into the thick of it. I glanced at the policeman who had reached the school. As he had not told us that Charlie and I should stop short and clear out as we were on the verge of stepping into a crime scene, I was spared from delivering the spiel: "Officer, my son has autism and he HAS to get to that slide right NOW or
